Create Soft-Touch Formulations in Three Steps

Soft-feel coatings are desired in many industries, each requiring coatings with very different property needs. Graphic arts applications tend to prioritize achieving a soft feel at a budget-friendly cost over long term durability, while the automotive and consumer electronics markets are more concerned with durability and physical properties. Even though the priorities differ across the industries, the 3 basic steps to create a soft-feel formulation are the same: Define the targeted "soft-feel" profile, select the appropriate oligomer backbone, and balance feel with durability through monomer and additive selection.

BR-3741AJ Polyether Urethane Acrylate

Ideal for PSAs and as an adhesion promoter. The extremely elongative nature of BR-3741AJ makes it an excellent candidate for consideration in UV light-curable PSAs as a reactive tackifier. It is also used as a co-oligomer for adhesion promotion in coatings. Films formulated with BR-3741AJ are highly flexible, elastomeric, and tacky. This oligomer is an excellent adhesion promoter, and compared to other reactive tackifiers it results in relatively tougher films.

A Dendritic Oligomer May Be the Solution

In our study, "Novel Pigment Stabilizing Dendritic Oligomers" we studied the performance of a family of Bomar dendritic oligomers for their use in hard protective coatings, overprint varnishes, and printing inks. These oligomers were selected to address various stabilization mechanisms like pigment wetting, electrostatic, and steric stabilization. Testing on inks and coatings formulated with these coligomers proved to be very fast curing and prone to substantially less oxygen inhibition. They also demonstrated good adhesion to different substrates and possessed excellent chemical resistance.
